Following the estactic joy of stumbling upon another beloved series/devistation of waiting for book two I found it necessary to jump into Libba Bray's first novel (and first book in the Gemma Doyle trilogy) A Great and Terrible Beauty.
After her mother dies under mysterious circumstances, sixteen year-old Gemma Doyle is shipped from her childhood home of India to a fancy- yet frigid boarding school in England. While navigating the ins and outs of a formal british living, Gemma is also trying to understand the confusing visions that come to her more and more frequently.
While I'm always a sucker for a story that takes place in a british boarding school (A Little Princess, Harry Potter, etc) this story did not quite suck me in with the same magic that The Diviners did. That being said Beauty was still a solid, enjoyable page-turner and I will no doubt continue on to books two and three. Seeing as A Great and Terrible Beauty was Bray's first novel and Diviners her most recent, I think perhaps this is a perfect example of how in a short time how a very good writer can become a great one.
